New Article - Living For The Pleasures Of The Moment Isn't Epicurean - It's Lunacy

Today added to the site is a new article on the popular picture of Epicurus as the philosopher of the moment.

You have almost certainly seen "Lorem Ipsum," the scrambled placeholder text used in design mockups. It comes from Cicero's On Ends, from a passage where the Epicurean Torquatus explains that people avoid pleasure only when they do not know how to pursue it rationally, and so meet with painful consequences.

The article gathers the case in plain language. Epicurus taught that we must weigh every consequence before we act, that we should seek the best life rather than the most sensation, that pain is sometimes the right choice, and that prudence is the greatest good of all. "Eat, drink, and let tomorrow take care of itself" is not Epicurean. It is lunacy.

The article can be read at the link below or by opening the "Ethics Analysis" menu in the left navigation sidebar.
